Eyvind Earle Sleeping Beauty Maleficent and Prince Phillip Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1959). "Now, Sword of Truth, fly swift and sure, that evil die, and good endure!" By the hand of Disney Legend Eyvind Earle (1916 - 2000), presented is a jaw-dropping original concept/color key painting for the 1959 Walt Disney masterpiece Sleeping Beauty. This is a stunning image of the climactic final battle between Prince Phillip and Maleficent in her terrifying dragon form. Maleficent in all her forms was designed by the great Marc Davis, possibly one of the most iconic designs in Disney feature films. Though Eyvind Earle's detailed style was initially unpopular among the animators, Marc Davis and Milt Kahl embraced the approach, which led to their appointment as supervising animators of the film's leading characters. This piece captures the harrowing energy of the final scenes as only Eyvind Earle can, using bold strokes of black, purple, lime green, and a spot of red distinguishing the hero. A color palette utilized in the final film! The piece is rendered masterfully in gouache on an enormous 28" x 9.5" illustration board. Signed in the lower right corner, this piece shows minor handling and edge wear with pinholes in corners from studio use. The condition is Very Good.More information about Eyvind Earle.
