Description

Animal Farm Snowball and Pigs Presentation Cel with Barn Production Background (Halas and Batchelor, 1954). "Snowball felt that education was the animals' next necessity. Some of the animals were brighter than others, of course." Snowball teaches arithmetic to his fellow pigs in this fantastic hand-inked and hand-painted presentation cel displayed an original production background from Animal Farm. This 1954 feature-length film tells the tale of George Orwell's timeless novella of the same name, an allegorical story of animals who organize to overthrow their oppressive farmer overlords, but are ultimately exploited by the opportunistic pigs among their ranks. The story reflects the events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917, and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. This ambitious animated adaptation was funded in part by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), who also made changes to the original script. The rights for a film adaptation were purchased from Orwell's widow Sonia after she was approached by agents working for the Office of Policy Coordination (OPC), a branch of the CIA that dealt with the use of culture to combat communism. Original production artwork from the film rarely come to market, and this rare background can be seen at the 29:10 mark. It is rendered in gouache on 12 field board, attributed to artists Bernard Carey, Digby Turpin, Matvyn Wright, and Gary Sycamore. Initially the background was part of a pan shot, and shows minor handling and edge wear with trimming on one side. The condition overall is Good.
