Top Cat Rare Opening Sequence Cel of Top Cat with Key Master Background (Hanna-Barbera, 1961). "He's the chief, he's the king, but above everything, he's the most tip-top... Top Cat!" The smooth-talking yellow cat wearing a purple porkpie hat is about to fish out a sewer worker's lunchbox in an original hand-inked, hand-painted 12 field cel placed on its matching Key Master background painting, a famous scene from the show's memorable opening sequence. Hanna-Barbera's second prime time animated series starred this get-rich-quick cat and his streetwise companions, kind of like an animated animal version of Leo Gorcey and the Bowery Boys crossed with Sgt. Bilko (Top Cat was voiced by Arnold Stang imitating Phil Silvers). Although the series ran for only one season, the show became very popular with repeated showings on Saturday mornings. Every one of the 30 Top Cat episodes (yes, television seasons used to be that long) began with this funny sequence showing what appeared to be Top Cat riding in a limousine, only to find he was on the car's fender; he then seems to be dining at a fine restaurant, but he's really sitting outside on a box as seen in this incredible setup. T.C. (as his "close friends" get to call him) and his cane have an image size of approximately 4.5" x 4.25". The cel is placed on the matching original hand-painted gouache on board background from the series; backgrounds were done by Neenah Maxwell, Robert Gentle, Fernando Montealegre, Art Lozzi, Richard H. Thomas, and Anthony Rizzo, while Kenneth Muse animated the opening sequence. This truly amazing setup is matted with an opening of 12" x 8" in a mat measuring 19.5" x 15.5". Condition of this well-preserved setup is Very Good to Fine with light handling.
