Disneyland on the Air Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck Little Golden Book Front Cover by Samuel Armstrong Signed Original Art with #D43 Published Book in Matted Display plus Additional Published Book (Walt Disney/Golden Press, 1955). Mickey and Donald celebrate the 1955 opening of Disneyland with this special Little Golden Book #D43. The art for this cover and all interior illustrations came from the hand of Sam Armstrong (1893 - 1976), whom Walt Disney chose over his head of the background department as lead background artist on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Sam was also one of four artists (and in fact a director) of the 1958 short film An Adventure in Art where four Disney artists painted their version of an old oak tree that stood on Barhan Boulevard in Burbank. This magnificent cover illustration with our boys dressed to the nines to put on a show was painted in gouache on illustration board with an approximate image size of 10.25" x 12.75", with Sam's distinctive signature in graphite along the lower right. This cover painting is displayed in a 26.25" x 23" within a mat opening of 11.5" x 17"; the mat also includes a full copy of the published book and an attractive black plaque, noting Mr. Armstrong's work as a segment director on Fantasia (Sam directed the "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" and "The Nutcracker Suite"). As a bonus, a first-printing copy of the book is included in addition to the one in the mat. The cover art is in Good to Very Good condition with some handling wear and age-related board toning.Auction Info
