Description
Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland Storybook Cover Original Art by Samuel Armstrong with Published Book (Walt Disney/Whitman, 1951). Alice attends a most peculiar tea party, in this stunning original cover illustration by Hugo Award-winning artist Samuel Armstrong (1893 - 1976). Mr. Armstrong did a little of everything at the Disney Studios - he was a layout artist, background painter (on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1937), writer (Donald's Ostrich in 1937, Pluto's Dream House in 1940), and sequence director on Fantasia (1940), Dumbo (1941), Bambi (1942), and Blue Bayou (1946). This one-of-a-kind original art is in watercolor on a heavy sheet of 28.25" x 18" Bainbridge illustration board that has been delicately signed in graphite along the lower right border area. The board includes the front cover, and a solid green back cover area (which features an ad for Whitman's "Cozy Corner" book line on the published book). The front cover area measures approximately 13.25" x 12". The art has faded from an old framing, affecting mainly the green background; the main image is still very attractive and vibrant. There is some minor paint loss in the "Alice" lettering, and there are old tape stains on the left side back cover area. A copy of the published book is included for comparison. Fair to Good condition with heavy handling and edge wear, plus fading, stains, and age-related toning.Auction Info
