Description
Ghost in the Shell Puppet Master Production Cel with Master Background and Animation Drawing (Production I.G, 1995). From the anime cult-classic Ghost in the Shell, we have in this lot an exceptional hand-painted production cel of the Puppet Master's cyborg shell displayed on one of the movie's detailed Master backgrounds. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of its release (November 18, 1995) this year, Ghost in the Shell is highly regarded as one of the best animated films of its era, known for its masterful adaptation of Masamune Shirow's manga by the legendary director Mamoru Oshii. This 14.25" x 9" two-layer cel displays a mystifying picture of the gynoid during the activation test taking place at about the 37:26 mark of the film, just before setting its eyes on Mokoto, measuring a figure size of 9.25" x 8". Displaying the intricate test facilities, the 15.25" x 10.75 gouache-rendered background was created to appear at approximately the 45.41, 46:12, and 47:46 timestamps. Background for this film are attributed to Masatoshi Kai, Shuuichi Hirata, Youji Takeshige, and art director Hiromasa Ogura. Included with the lot is the matching animation drawing rendering the Puppet Master shell in graphite and colored pencil. Light fading can be seen on the ink of the linework. The cel layers are adhered together and the cel is taped to the background with archival artist tape. Pinholes can be seen on the corners of the background. Three areas are trimmed out of the top edge of the background, with pegholes taped to the area. The animation drawing shows minor surface scuffing and faint paint residue from the cel. Overall, the lot is in Very Good condition with very light handling and edge wear from production.Auction Info
