Description

Popeye the Sailor "Wimmin Hadn't Oughta Drive" Master Production Background with Popeye Trimmed Production Cel (Fleischer Studios, 1940/c. 1930s-40s). "Step on the brakes! Step on 'em!" Popeye tries to teach Olive Oyl to drive in this 1940 short and the two nearly collide with an oncoming train. This lot includes a wonderful hand-painted background from the short with a production cel of Popeye meticulously trimmed to outline. The background can be found at about the 3:50 mark of the short as Popeye helps the car narrowly avoid speeding into oncoming traffic, beautifully capturing the city street in gouache on background board. It includes a stamp on the back with the hand-written name of the artist, Sylvester, the date 5/14/1940, production code P9-10, and scene number 17. The cel itself doesn't appear in "Wimmin Hadn't Oughta Drive" but is no less charming, showing full figure Popeye with a wide smile. It has been professionally restored and attached to the background. Both are presented in a 10.75'' x 7.75'' mat window and 16'' x 14'' overall mat. Very Good condition with minor edge and handling wear.
