Description

Snow Place Like Home Popeye the Sailor Production Background (Famous Studios, 1948). Here's a rare 16 field production background from Famous Studios' Popeye the Sailor cartoon Snow Place Like Home. Famous Studios was the animation division of Paramount Pictures, founded in 1942 after Paramount took control of Fleischer Studios and ousted its founders Max and Dave Fleischer in 1941. The studio continued to produce Popeye cartoons until its dissolution in 1967. In the cartoon Snow Place Like Home, Popeye and Olive are relaxing on a boat off sunny Miami Beach when a hurricane suddenly takes them all the way to the North Pole. Popeye lands on the snow in his swimming suit while the bikinied Olive Oyl crashes through the ice layer of a frozen-over lake. Encased in a block of ice, Olive Oyl is taken by Popeye to a trading post to thaw out. There, they meet a "Bluto-type" who ends up in a fight with Popeye. We can see the fight take place over this background near the 6:36 mark. The background is hand-painted in gouache on 17" x 13" illustration board. Backgrounds for this cartoon were painted by Anton Loeb at Famous Studios. The background painting exhibits edge wear, with some residue and debris in the margins. Condition is Very Good.
