Description
The Goose That Laid the Golden Egg RARE Felix the Cat Production Cel Setup with Key Master Background (Van Buren Studio, 1936). "Good work Goldie, keep it up!" Felix thanks his magical golden goose for her continued contributions to his charity work in this rare original Key Master setup from The Goose That Laid the Golden Egg, the first of only three Felix the Cat shorts produced in Technicolor by Van Buren Studios. This short-lived, three picture color revival debuted in its entirety between early February and late May 1936, with a fourth left cancelled in the storyboard stages. This would be the last appearances of Felix until he moved to the small screen with Famous Studios' 1958 television series adaptation. This short saw Felix already in possession of the magic goose typically associated with the fairy tale "Jack and the Beanstalk", and using Goldie to help bring wealth back to the poor townsfolk. This sweet moment can be spotted near the 0:50 mark when viewed online, just before Felix begins to grind the full collection bowl of golden eggs into usable currency. The multilayer cel has been hand-inked and hand-painted with full-figured Felix rendered to 2.25" x 2.5" including his shadow on the upper layer and the 1" grinder crank appearing on the lower layer. The 12 field 2-peghole nitrate cel bears sequence numbers in the upper right corner, and has been professionally restored. The hand-painted Key Master background is rendered in gouache and ink on 2-peghole board trimmed to 13" x 10" and numbered 4 along the left edge. With typical handling and edgewear including the noted cel restoration, age-related toning, remaining tape, minor warping to the cel layers with faint edge/corner creasing to the background, and pin/staple holes along the top edge of the setup, overall this rare, Key Master setup is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
