Gaar Williams Wotta Life! Wotta Life! Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 4 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1930-32). Williams meant what he said when he said it, with a grin and a grimace: "Wotta Life!" The great cartoonist wrenched humor from the petty annoyances and backhanded ironies that afflict everyone -- whether nowadays, or 'way back when. His timelessness serves at once to chronicle a bygone age, even as his art demonstrates an unchanging Human Condition. A Lincoln's Birthday entry (2-12-30) overrides nostalgia with sarcasm. A newlyweds cartoon (6-9-32) shows just how soon the honeymoon is over. A frustrated peddler (11-30-32) depicts a pitfall common to the profession -- even though the method of peddling has changed. And a lazybones farmboy (5-28-30) grows up to become a hyperkinetic golf nut. Williams is right up there with H.T. Webster (The Timid Soul) and J.R. Williams (Out Our Way) in terms of gold-standard philosophical humor. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13" square. Toning and handling wear commensurate with age.
