Description

George Broderick Popeye and King Blozo 90th Anniversary Tribute Original Art (National Cartoonists Society, 2019). E.C. Segar's Popeye the Sailor gets a very Segar-esque treatment from Broderick, a versatile comic-book storyteller who has been drawing the one-eyed hero since age 5 -- literally speaking, Broderick's first freelance job: As a preschooler, he would peddle his sketches around his neighborhood. Here is an astonishingly accurate channeling of Segar's style, pairing Popeye with the worry-wart King Blozo of Nazilia, as depicted in a 1931 sequence of Thimble Theatre. The big payoff is a punchline in Popeye's best manner of mangling the "Englitch Langridge." Broderick even gets the Segar-style lettering absolutely (or "absolukely") right. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 14" x 10". Excellent condition.

Proceeds from the winning bids in this special NCS "Popeye the Sailor's 90th Birthday" auction will go to the NCS Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) charity that works in tandem with the National Cartoonists Society to advance the ideals and standards of the cartooning profession, to stimulate and encourage aspiring cartoonists through scholarships and educational programs, and to provide financial assistance to cartoonists and their families in times of hardship.
