William E. Hill Among Us Mortals-related Original Drawings Group of 10 (New York Tribune and Other Newspapers, 1920s). "Hill is popular ... because you think his pictures look like somebody you know... But they don't; they look like you. Or if you prefer, like me... [H]e draws the folks everybody knows." So wrote Franklin P. Adams in 1917, introducing the first collection of Among Us Mortals, Hill's long-running series of satirical portraits. These fine individual drawings date from the same period as Among Us Mortals and take a similarly realistic-sarcastic approach to caricaturing humanity in photo-realistic terms. They are, however, rendered in a textured-charcoal medium quite different from the ink-dot pointillism of Mortals, and all appear to have originated as newspaper spot-illustrations. Brilliance is brilliance, whatever form it takes. Charcoal and watercolor retouching on textured stock. Image areas, 8" x 7" to 8" x 10". Conspicuous age-toning and scattered peeling. Good to Very Good condition.
