Description

Richard Felton Outcault Pore Lil Mose in Chinatown Comic-Strip Print (New York Herald Co., 1901). Outcault's pioneering feature (following his Yellow Kid and Buster Brown features) was first to depict an African-American as the title character. Sympathetic in outlook though unmistakably a product of its quainter times, this episode concerns a disastrous visit to a restaurant that appears to be a front for an opium den. References abound to gambling ("Fan Tan") and superstitious ritualistic behavior ("Joss"). Moderate age-toning. Image area, 14" x 10". Very Good condition.
