Description

Robert Lavin American Bank Note Co. Security Painting Original Stock Certificate Vignette (A.B.N. Co., 1980s). Before American artists developed the Hudson River School or the tradition of Western frontier paintings, the emerging country (early in the 19th century) asserted an aesthetic force in the design of bank notes and stock certificates. Lavin is a descendant of this practice, which blurs the distinction between high finance and fine art. The purpose is simple: The more expertly rendered the artwork on a note or bond, the more difficult to counterfeit. This fine example suggests global industrial dominance in frankly voluptuous terms. Opaque greyscale watercolors on fibreboard. Image area, 19" x 14". Signed outside image area. Moderate handling wear and edge-barking. Very Good condition.
