Description
Sleeping Beauty Pan Production Background (Walt Disney, 1959). Sleeping Beauty, Disney's 16th animated feature, took almost ten years to complete, and was the studio's first animated movie to be filmed in Super Technirama 70 widescreen. This hand-painted production background was used in the making of this classic Disney fairytale. Background painters under the supervision of color stylist Eyvind Earle include; Frank Armitage, Al Dempster, Bill Layne, Dick Anthony, Richard Thomas, Thelma Witmer, Walt Peregoy, Ralph Hulett, Fil Mottola, and Anthony Rizzo. The success of the film was no doubt due in part to the remarkable artists involved in its making. The background appears at the 1:01:37 as good fairies Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather sneak into Maleficent's castle to free Prince Phillip. It's painted in gouache on 24" x 12" background board that has been trimmed along the right side. The lower right border is marked "2nd Stop 5150" in graphite. This was Disney's most ambitious and expensive film to date and and took nearly seven years to complete. Every aspect of it is beyond beautiful and with the implementation of Xerography the following year, Sleeping Beauty represents the last Disney feature to be hand-inked. The art shows handling and has tape residue along some of the borders. Condition is Very Good.Auction Info
