Description
Mary Blair So Dear to My Heart Character Costume Design Painting (Walt Disney, 1949). This original painting of a well-dressed, wealthy and important man was created by Disney artist Mary Blair in development of a character and his costume in Walt Disney's live-action and animated feature film So Dear to My Heart, based on the book Midnight and Jeremiah by Sterling North. Ms. Blair is credited for Cartoon Art Treatment along with John Hench and Dick Kelsey. In addition to helping style the animated sequences, Ms. Blair filled the role of character and costume designer. A character such as this fellow does not appear in the film, yet he would fit the time period and setting of the story. Mary Blair joined her husband, Lee Blair, at The Walt Disney Studios in 1940 as a conceptual artist. She traveled to South America with Walt Disney and "El Grupo" on the U.S. Government-sponsored goodwill and research trip that resulted in the feature films Saludos Amigos (1943) and The Three Caballeros (1945). That experience was the turning point in her art and career. Her unique design and color styling influenced Disney animation through the making of Peter Pan (1953), and her credits include Song of the South (1946), Melody Time (1948), So Dear to My Heart (1949), Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland (1951), Susie the Little Blue Coupe (1952), and The Little House (1952). After working as an independent artist for a few years, Walt Disney called her back to work in development of it's a small world for the 1964-65 New York World's Fair, the attraction that continues to display her talent and vision to millions around the world. Her last projects for Disney were two murals for Tomorrowland at Disneyland (now vanished), and the Grand Canyon Concourse mural in the Contemporary Hotel at Walt Disney World, which to this day remains the focal point of the hotel's main public area. So Dear by My Heart was one of Walt Disney's favorite films. He is quoted in Leonard Maltin's The Disney Films as having told a reporter: "So Dear was especially close to me. Why, that's the life my brother and I grew up with as kids out in Missouri." Ms. Blair died in 1978 in Soquel, California. This original is from the estate of Mary Blair via the estates of Lee Blair, Preston Blair and Kevin Blair. This original production character-costume design painting is in opaque watercolor on 10" x 12" heavyweight paper, with an image size of 6.25" x 9.5". A Howard Lowery Certificate of Authenticity is included. Art condition is Good with handling wear, creases, and stains along the top edge.Auction Info
