Description
Toot, Whistle, Plunk, and Boom Storybook Illustration Original Art (Walt Disney, c. 1950s-60s). Disney's innovative 3D animated "Adventures in Music" short Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom (1953) won an Oscar for Best Short Subject (Cartoons). Directed by Ward Kimball (a musician himself) and Charles A. Nichols, it tells a brief history of musical instruments, starting with the cavemen. The film is considered #29 in Jerry Beck's book, The 50 Greatest Cartoons. Although there was no Little Golden Book for this title, the short was celebrated in a couple of "Record and a Picture Book" sets like Walt Disney Presents A Child's Primer - Music: How It's Made and Played (1961). Here's an original artboard with three illustrations - a caveman with a simple music pipe, a 1950s-style jazz saxophonist, and an illustration of six musicians playing flute, bassoon, clarinet, oboe, accordion, and harmonica. The three pieces are all heavily stylized and rendered in mixed media on a single sheet of illustration board measuring 20" x 15". The first two are produced directly on the board, with image sizes of approximately 3.5" x 5.5" and 4" x 5.5". The third illustration is on paper and loosely mounted to the board; paper measures 7.5" x 10.25". Condition is Good, with toning and handling wear.Auction Info
