Description

Noel Sickles Scorchy Smith Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-18-36 (A. P. Newsfeatures, 1936). Noel Sickles had outgrown the limitations of the comic-strip idiom by 1936, but he proposed to stick with Scorchy Smith on condition of a raise in salary. When the syndicate refused, Sickles moved along into commercial illustration -- taking his unique mastery of high-contrast shadowplay along with him. This moody episode represents Sickles' final week on Scorchy Smith, a classic example of the artist's chiaroscuro technique. The composition bears the title "A Very Long Chance," in keeping with a syndicate practice of assigning each weekday sequence a unique name as a copyright-protection device. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 24" x 5.25". Aside from some light-moderate toning and edge/corner wear, the selection is in Very Good condition.
From the Bobby G. Murphy Collection.
