E. C. Segar Thimble Theatre (Popeye) Daily Comic Strip Original Art, dated 8-1-35 (King Features Syndicate, 1935). Popeye the Sailor, unhappy ruler of the kingdom of Spinachova, receives an unwelcome visit from the Court Jester. Brilliant absurdity from Popeye's originator, Segar. Popeye had become the star player of Thimble Theatre shortly after his casual, matter-of-fact introduction in 1929. The outrageous premise of the "Spinachova" narrative arc involves the absence of women from the population -- the natives are restless, of course, and Popeye is consequently a sad dictator. Or as Popeye phrases it, "I yama sad dictipator." Nobody mangles the "langwidge" like Popeye the Sailor. Ink over graphite on age-toned Bristol board. Image area, 20.5" x 4.5". Five panels contain conspicuously yellowed patches, resulting from the peeling of layers of Zipatone shading film. Otherwise in Very Good condition.More information about E. C. Segar.
