Description

Alex Raymond Secret Agent X-9 Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-25-35 (King Features Syndicate, 1935). A carload of top-hatted aristocrats stops short of a bridge -- good thing, too, as two thugs are waiting to touch off a cache of dynamite. As always, Raymond's artwork is superb, befitting the continuing influence of hard-boiled prose master Dashiell Hammett (of The Maltese Falcon), who had written much of the early X-9 continuity and remained an inspiration to script-successors Don Moore and Leslie Charteris. This is from a peak-of-accomplishment period for X-9, which King Features had commissioned in 1934 to provide competition for the Chicago Tribune Syndicate's radical crimebuster feature, Dick Tracy. Ink over graphite with blue-pencil shading on conjoined pieces of Bristol board. The image area measures approximately 23.5" x 5.5". In Good condition, missing the syndicate date strip, and with a tight left-edge trim, conspicuous handling wear, and light soiling.
