Description

Bernie Wrightson Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine "Graveyard Examiner" Column Heading Illustration Original Art (Warren, 1970s). A distinguishing feature of Famous Monsters' second decade as a movie-buff magazine was Wrightson's uniquely styled heading for the "Graveyard Examiner" feature. Typical of Wrightson's tendency to conflate humor with horror, the drawing depicts a ghoulish Sherlock Holmes -- complete with Inverness cape, deerstalker headgear, briar pipe, and oversized magnifying glass -- quite literally examining a grave. Hence the title. Rendered in ink over graphite on Bristol board. Dimensions, 19" x 9.5". Excellent condition, with marginal handling wear and light soiling.
From the Roger Hill Collection.
