Description
William Randolph Hearst Christmas Greetings Book With Original Art By 35 Hearst Strip Artists (King Features Syndicate, 1943). This special collection of art was presented to newspaper publisher (and owner of King Features Syndicate) William Randolph Hearst, featuring art from as many King Features artists as were available. It was a tradition to honor Mr. Hearst is this way, and these deluxe volumes were truly incredible one-of-a-kind treasures. Illustrations by Alex Raymond and George Herriman headline this remarkable collection of art. Almost all illustrations are in full color. The cover of this red leather volume reads, "Christmas Greetings to William Randolph Hearst 1943."
The other artists represented here are George McManus, Chic Young, a Disney artist (signed Walt Disney), Bela Zaboly, Cliff Sterrett, Jimmy Swinnerton, Jimmy Murphy, Otto Soglow, Harold Knerr, Jimmy Hatlo, Percy Crosby, Charles Flanders, E. Simms Campbell, Otto Messmer, Jim Gary, William Ritt and Clarence Gray, Dudley Fisher, Syd Hoff, Feg Murray, Edwina, Fanny Cory, Joe Musial, Lee W. Stanley, Ruth Carroll, Elmer Winner, Les Forgrave, Russ Westover, Gene Ahern, Paul Robinson, George Swanson, Phil Davis, Tom Little, Scott, Eddie Sullivan and Charlie Schmidt, and Hilda Terry.
There's also original text by the legendary Louella Parsons as well as humor columnist Arthur "Bugs" Bear.
This volume measures 7.5" x 9.5", and each illustration is 6.5" x 9". The binding is firmly intact, although the art boards have slightly curled edges. The art all remains as vibrant and colorful as that Christmas morning when W. R. first unwrapped it.
William Hearst was a larger-than-life character, and the inspiration for the classic Orson Welles film, Citizen Kane; this personally owned book is quite simply a remarkable snapshot from the heyday of the American comic strip, and of the American newspaper for that matter!
