Description
Shadow Comics #1-12 Bound Volume (Street & Smith, 1940-41). This includes Shadow Comics #1-12, bound into a single hardcover volume. Although not all are trimmed, there is some trimming throughout (most evident in the cover to issue #1). The first issue marks the first comic book appearances of the Shadow and Doc Savage, as well as the first comic published by Street & Smith.These 12 issues comprise the entirety of Volume One for the title, featuring not just the Shadow and Doc Savage, but also fellow pulp heroes Bill Barnes, the Avenger, Norgil the Magician, and more. Early issues feature painted covers directly inspired by the pulps; for example, issue #3 comes from The Shadow #21 (January 1, 1933) while issue #4 features a classic decapitation cover from The Shadow #103 (June 1, 1936). We encounter most of these issues only once a year (or even less), and this volume offers an instant collection of these rare pulpy comics.
The page quality ranges from cream to white. There is some light chipping, creasing, foxing, and small tears throughout. Issue #4 has large water stains to the cover, and small water stains throughout. Issue #8 has a small piece of tape on the front cover. Issue #9 has two bindery holes on the left side punched through covers and pages. Issue #12 has water damage throughout. Overall, it is a very readable volume. The volume has blank covers and an embossed spine, noting "Shadow Comics Vol. 1". Approximate Overstreet VG value for group = $5,750.
