Description
Detective Comics #40 Twilight Pedigree (DC, 1940) CGC FN+ 6.5 Cream to off-white pages. To date, we've offered only four other unrestored copies of this issue with a higher grade than this, and the most recent was 12 years ago. This key Bat-book features the origin and first appearance of the original Clayface (Basil Karlo), whose feature film debut is currently in development and drawing renewed attention to this issue. That doesn't yet overshadow the fact that it technically features the Joker's first cover appearance, albeit without the white face and purple suit. The story featuring the Clown Prince of Crime that was originally intended for this issue was instead used in Batman #1, and this cover is very similar to a splash page in that book. Other tales include Detective mainstays Speed Saunders, Slam Bradley, and the Crimson Avenger. Artists include Bob Kane, Jerry Robinson, and Fred Guardineer. Unsurprisingly, this is one of Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics. Overstreet 2024 FN 6.0 value = $13,500; VF 8.0 value = $30,000. CGC census 5/25: 3 in 6.5, 8 higher.CGC Grader Notes:
