Description

Barry Windsor-Smith National Lampoon #26 May, 1972 "Norman the Barbarian" Faux Cover Original Art (National Lampoon Inc., 1972). Barry Windsor-Smith crafts a clever send-up of Marvel's Conan the Barbarian with this parody cover that was also a pot-shot at journalist and political activist Norman Mailer. His sidekick in the published story was Bresd-Lin, so this was a riff on Mailer's failed run for Mayor of New York City in 1969. Viewed now, the art is a refreshing look back to when BWS signed his work simply "Barry Smith". Even the trade dressing in the header is a spot-on imitation of Marvel Comics from the 1970s. Not surprising, as this was produced just 19 months after Conan the Barbarian #1 hit the stands, and was contemporaneous with Windsor-Smith's issue #15 "The Green Empress of Melniboné". A great piece of comic history and fine looking vintage Windsor-Smith art, created in ink over graphite and blue pencil on Bristol board with an image area of 10.25" x 14.5". The logo and logo figure are all hand-drawn original art. The header banner and issue/price box are stat paste-ups, as is the COCA stamp. The logo section was produced on a separate piece of Bristol that has been affixed to the lower image with tape on the reverse side. The text at the bottom is paste-up, and the printed signature is held on with production tape. The board is lightly toned, and there is glue residue in the image area just below the logo section. Staple in the top left corner, and production notes in the bottom margins. In Good condition.
