Description
Weird Tales #108 December 1932 (Popular Fiction) CGC VF- 7.5 Off-white to white pages. One of two highest-graded CGC copies of the first appearance of Conan, this is also the sole highest-graded copy we've ever seen! The Cimmerian barbarian makes his debut here in "The Phoenix on the Sword" by Robert E. Howard. Unlike most future Conan appearances, this issue has the benefit of including the story in full rather than serialized installments. This has been called "the Amazing Fantasy #15 of pulps", an apt analogy befitting the issue's major first appearance and massive popularity.Howard repurposed an unsold Kull story "By This Axe I Rule!" into "The Phoenix on the Sword", introducing audiences to the stately King Conan beset on all sides by rebellious interlopers. This lead to numerous sequels during Howard's lifetime and countless more in the decades that followed across books, comics, movies, and more. Conan's multimedia success gives this pulp great crossover appeal for pulp collectors, comic collectors, and even fans of Arnold Schwarzenegger!
J. Allen St. John's classic bondage cover for this issue depicts a truly weird scene from "Buccaneers of Venus" by O. A. Kline. The iconic medley of monsters practically jumps off the page on this immaculate copy. Weird Tales is known for its red banners and spines, and both burn as bright as ever here. Pulp-format issues with overhangs (as opposed to bedsheet or digest-sized pulps) are the most difficult to find in high-grade due to their inevitably fragile edges. The nicest copies we've offered of this key issue have been CGC 6.5 / FN+ with a top sale price to date of $18,000. We expert barbaric bidding for the highest-graded copy of the most beloved issue of Weird Tales and one of the most sought-after of all pulps. Bookery's Guide to Pulps Second Edition 2020 VF value = $3,750. CGC census 4/25: 2 in 7.5, none higher.
From the Red Fury Collection.
