Description

SpongeBob SquarePants "Tea at the Treedome" Sandy Cheeks Production Cel Setup with Master Background (Nickelodeon, 1999). "I hope y'all like your tea strong. Drink up!" From her introductory Episode 1 segment "Tea at the Treedome" of the iconic Nicktoon SpongeBob SquarePants, presented here is a delightful Master setup of the Texan squirrel Sandy Cheeks. This mega-popular Nickelodeon animated series (the fourth-longest running American animated series ever, currently with 15 seasons) about an undersea sponge and his friends was in fact created by a marine science teacher, Stephen Hillenburg. Only the first season was traditionally cel animated beginning with this episode which debuted on May 1, 1999. "The Treedome" follows SpongeBob's first encounter with an air-breathing animal in Bikini Bottom with whom he becomes fast friends. But when Sandy invites him to her home (a climate-controlled dome filled with air instead of water), SpongeBob gets quite the dehydrating surprise. The treedome's interior airlock door can be spotted near the 21:29 timestamp of the full 3-segment episode when viewed online, with a similar background also seen near 19:45, while Sandy's frame can be seen at the very end of the segment near the 22:48 timestamp as she prepares iced tea in the water helmets of her sea-dwelling guests. Sandy has been hand-painted with hand-inked detail to half-figure in her purple swimsuit rather than her space-like air suit to a character size of 5.25" x 5.25" nicely centered on the 12 field cel which is numbered in the lower right. The Master background is hand-painted in gouache on background board measuring approximately 11.5" x 8.25" and mounted to an additional board which bears production codes and pegholes along the lower edge measuring 14.25" x 10.25" overall. Background artists for Episode 1 include Andy 'Spike' Clark, Nick Jennings, Calvin G. Liang, and Eun Kyung Sung. With typical handling and edge wear including minor linework wear to the cel and faint surface wear/debris with minor edge creasing to the background, overall this display of Southern hospitality is in Very Good condition.
