Description

Donald Duck RARE Track and Field Character Study Drawing (Walt Disney, c. 1940s). Donald gives it his all in the track and field events with this rare and unusual character study drawing featuring an assortment of athletic trials. Possibly created for an unproduced short in the 1940s (give or take a year on either end of the decade), this sheet exhibits the transitional 5-peghole arrangement common of the era. Although Donald had previously starred in Donald's Golf Game (1938) and The Hockey Champ (1939), the 1940s would see Goofy emerge victorious as Disney's prime sports star thanks in part to his popular "How To" subseries while Donald joined up with the Army for a series of World War II propaganda films. Though Goofy appeared in a similarly themed one-reel The Olympic Champ (1942) which featured races and pole vaulting, Donald would later participate in several track and field events himself in Carl Barks' 1956 comic "Olympic Tryouts" including the 100 meter dash, low hurdles, and javelin throw; Barks had previously been an animator and one of Donald's storymen at Disney from 1935-42, before transitioning to Western Publishing to produce the famous Duck's comic book stories that would make Barks a household name. Rendered loosely in graphite with some blue pencil, Donald's 7 full-figure images range in height from approximately 1" to 3" spanning the 12 field animation sheet nearly edge-to-edge and depicting events such as the long jump, low hurdles, and pole vault. With typical handling and edge wear including faint age-related toning and minor corner creasing/tears, overall this rare sporty study of Donald is in Very Good condition.
