SpongeBob SquarePants "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy" Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy Production Cel Setup with Master Background (Nickelodeon, c. 1999/2001). "Alright, where's the danger, son? Bring it on!" Bikini Bottom's original superheroes have stepped out of retirement to fight crime once again in this original production cel set from the two Season 1 "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy" episode segments, presented on a Master background from first SpongeBob SquarePants episode to feature the characters. This beloved series was one of the last Nicktoons to premiere in the 1990s, and the only one of the decade still airing with a total of 14 seasons and counting. Of those 14 seasons, however, only Season 1 was traditionally cel animated. In the first "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy", SpongeBob spends the episode 6 segment trying to convince his cherished heroes to leave retirement; then later in the episode 20 segment "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy II" SpongeBob wins the heroes' Conch Signal in a TV contest, calling for their aid at every available opportunity. Of this multilayer setup, Barnacle Boy can be spotted near the 7:44 mark of their first episode segment and Mermaid Man can be spotted near the 4:19 mark of their second segment. The pair share a remarkable hand-painted combined character size of 6.5" x 9" and each feature small hand-inked details. The multilayer 12 field cel is paired with a detailed Master background of the heroes' retirement home Shady Shoals which can be spotted near the 9:54 mark of their debut episode 6 segment. It has been hand-painted in gouache on trimmed background board measuring approximately 13.75" x 10.25" with production codes present along the lower edge. Backgrounds for episode 6 were created by Peter Bennett, Michael Chen, Andy Clark, and Calvin G. Liang. With typical studio handling and wear including some linework wear with areas of restoration, minor surface debris/residue, pinpoint area of paint wear/loss primarily to Barnacle Boy's shirt, minor edge wear, and light surface wear to the background from prior paint adhesion, overall this setup is in Very Good condition.
