Description
Aesop and Son Color Key Paintings by Sam Clayberger Group of 2 (Jay Ward, c. 1959). The storyteller of ancient Greece became a cartoon segment in the ninth episode of Rocky and His Friends. In legend, Aesop was a homely ex-slave, but in Jay Ward's world he was a father with a son that tends to end each episode with a pun title to the fable his father just told. These rare original color key paintings are by Jay Ward color stylist Sam Clayberger (1926 - 2018). It's odd that the one with the most detail is in shades of gray; although Rocky and His Friends was broadcast in black and white, all animation was done in full color. Perhaps this gray tone color key was for an interstitial segment or a commercial. It measures approximately 4.75" x 3.5". The second color key is in color but without facial detail on Aesop and Junior; it measures 4.5" x 3.5". Both are painted in gouache on background boards and are in Very Good to Fine condition with light handling wear. From the Archive of Sam Clayberger and Michael Kadin.
