Black Mask #42 May 15, 1923 (Pro-Distribution) CGC Apparent VG+ 4.5 Slight (C-1) Off-white pages. This important issue features what is widely considered the first hard-boiled detective story, "Three Gun Terry" by Carroll John Daly featuring the first appearance of Terry Mack. Terry Mack reappeared in only one more story and a single novel, although he served partly as the template for Race Williams, Daly's extremely popular recurring detective hero who first appeared the following month. Mack and Williams both provided the template for future recurring detectives like Sam Spade. Bookery's notes issues from this era as "especially scarce" and this is one we've never encountered before. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: tear seals to cover, cover re-attached with glue." Bookery's Guide to Pulps Second Edition 2020 GD 2.0 value = $400; VG 4.0 value = $1,200.
