Description

Weird Tales #125 May 1934 Frank M. Robinson Pedigree (Popular Fiction) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white pages. If a Conan cover by Frank Frazetta is worth $13.5M, what is the best copy of Conan's first-ever image in color worth? This lot will answer that burning question.
Margaret Brundage painted the first Conan cover appearance for this issue, which also has the distinction of being the first color image of the classic Cimmerian barbarian. Brundage illustrated numerous covers based on Conan stories and was the first illustrator to ever depict any Conan-related scene in color, although the majority of her covers center on women in peril rather than Conan himself. Conan appeared in 17 stories in Weird Tales released across more than two dozen individual issues but only graced the cover of three pulps, all illustrated by the illustrious Brundage. Margaret Brundage and Robert E. Howard represent two of the most lauded creators in not only Weird Tales, but all of pulps.
This issue's cover depicts Conan from "Queen of the Black Coast" by Howard, an undisputed classic story by the barbarian's creator. This pedigree copy ranks among the top five nicest pulps we have ever seen and is very likely the best copy in the world of this key issue. Few pulp facsimile reprints or paperbacks approach this level of condition even when they are hot off the presses, let alone a 90+ year-old pulp magazine. This is the pinnacle of pulp collecting.
The highest-graded copy we have seen prior is a CGC 9.0 with cream to off-white pages, which sold for $11,400, more than double the price of a CGC 8.0 we offered earlier this year. There is no telling what this one may hammer for. Bookery's Guide to Pulps Second Edition 2020 VF 8.0 value = $900. CGC census 9/25: 1 in 9.6, none higher. NOTE: The newly released Bookery's Guide to Pulps: Revised Third Edition 2025 VF 8.0 value for this issue is $3,000.
ADDITIONAL NOTE: Although not mentioned on the label as pictured, this book has color touch on the spine, which is noted in the CGC grader's notes. This book is currently being re-holdered and the new CGC label will note "Small amount of color touch on spine of cover".
