Description

Alfred Andriola Charlie Chan Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 5-13-39 (McNaught Syndicate, Inc., 1939). Charlie Chan, heroic detective with the Honolulu Police, leads a solemn procession into a room shrouded in mystery. (Chan appears in silhouette in Panel 1.) Ominous business afoot for Andriola's depiction of novelist Earl Derr Biggers' famous sleuth - the comics version had started in 1938 amidst a proliferation of Chan movies from 20th Century-Fox and would end shortly after the final Fox Chan, 1942's Castle in the Desert. After which, Andriola began developing the Kerry Drake crime-comics feature for a 1943 premiere. The present Chan composition is inscribed to fellow cartoonist Harry Bjorklund. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with blue-wash shading. Image area, 20" x 5". Light toning, with handling wear. Very Good condition.
From the Bobby G. Murphy Collection.
