Released in 1998, it marked the first entry in the SaGa series to debut on the PlayStation and the first released outside Japan without the "Final Fantasy" branding used in earlier Western localizations. Developed by Square's renowned Product Development Division 2 under the direction of Akitoshi Kawazu, the game pushed boundaries with its "Free Scenario" system, which let players explore seven interwoven storylines in any order.
