Black Mask #129 September 1929 "The Maltese Falcon" (Pro-Distribution, 1929) CGC VG+ 4.5 Off-white pages. Featuring part one of "The Maltese Falcon" by Dashiell Hammett and the first appearance of Hammett's genre-defining hard-boiled detective Sam Spade, this is one of the most desirable pulps in any genre. Spade features on the iconic cover by H. C. Murphy, introducing the five-part serialization of the classic detective novel. The Maltese Falcon was first adapted to film in 1931, and would be adapted across various mediums multiple times in the following decades. The novel was most famously adapted in 1941 by director John Huston into the film noir classic starring Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade.Not only is this issue highly influential, it is also quite rare. This is only the fifth copy we've encountered and by far the nicest; we last offered an Apparent (restored) VG- copy in January 2024 for $8,400 and a GD/VG copy in November 2023 for $9,600. Bookery's notes Black Mask issues from 1926-38 as "uncommon at best". It is offered alongside a wide selection of elusive and important issues of Black Mask and other detective pulps. Bookery's Guide to Pulps Second Edition VG value = $1200. CGC census 7/24: 1 in 4.5, none higher.
