Description

Johnny Craig Extra! #4 Cover Original Art (EC, 1955). Reporter Keith Michaels is one of several shipwreck survivors who attempt to reach shore by riding over a coral reef -- and naturally, their lifeboat wrecks, in this cover illustration to the story, "Dateline: Rio Para." This fourth issue of EC's short-lived New Direction title was the first to abandon the newspaper front page format in favor of one full-color image, rather than a greytone "photograph." The art image, including the hand-drawn Extra! logo and "World Press" masthead photostats, measures approximately 9" x 13". The illustration is in ink over graphite on blue-lined Bristol board, and its image area is 7.5" x 6.5". It appears that a photostat had at one time been glued over the artwork, perhaps to enlarge the image (even though the published cover was shot directly from the original artboard). In addition to the rubber cement stains, the bottom section of the board has water damage, with handling wear in the borders. Overall Good condition.
