Description

Fred Fredericks Mandrake the Magician Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-1-1985 (King Features Syndicate, 1985). Heroic sorcerer Mandrake and his cohort, Prince Lothar, ponder the incumbent menace of a villain known as the Cobra. A quietly suspenseful prelude to an exciting adventure, small in scale but big in attitude. By the 1980s, King Features Syndicate had reduced the original-artwork dimensions of its features, the better to conform to comics-page shrinkage in the newspapers. The upshot of this cost-cutting gambit was to encourage simpler images by cramping the artists' styles. Fredericks defied the trend with such dynamically designed and lavishly illustrated compositions as this one. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Compressed image area, 13" x 3.75". Light toning and handing wear. Excellent condition.
