Description

Leslie Turner Captain Easy Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-24-45 (NEA Service, 1945). William Lee, a Southerner better known as Captain Easy, escapes under Axis fire with a cache of strategic photographs in this urgent episode from the long-running adventure strip. Easy had originated in Texas cartoonist Roy Crane's Wash Tubbs (the title character was Crane's self-caricature), then caught on so well with the readership as to graduate to star billing. Crane left in 1943 to develop Buz Sawyer at King Features, and his assistant Turner took charge of Captain Easy, utilizing a Crane-influenced style. Ink over graphite on DuoTone board with an image area of 16.25" x 4.5". Toning, crease down the center, marginal pinhole, minor staining in margins, and minor top right corner crease. Inscribed to fellow cartoonist Ed McGeean. In Very Good condition. Accompanied by a newsprint clipping of the published strip.
