Description

Gould Assistant Artist Dick Tracy Unpublished Consecutive Daily Comic Strips Original Art Group of 6 (1956). Tragedy and ticking-clock suspense collide as the mute girl Spec witnesses her mother Flossie gunned down by Ivy, while Dick Tracy and Rodney race to stop a nitroglycerin bomb capable of blowing an entire mountainside. Ivy even sings his signature "Boola Boola," the Yale fight song, a wink that likely plays off his nickname. These harrowing, unpublished Dick Tracy strips, called "blanks", offer a rare window into Chester Gould's process of testing his art assistants, to gage their abilities and see if they were ready to make a larger contribution to the popular comic strip. Multiple panels were left uninked or unfinished and no copyright attribution present, dated 12-10 to 12-15 of 1956. Ink over graphite on Bristol boards with image areas of 16.5" x 5". Light toning, with a hint of foxing, smudging/soiling, minor spot staining, marginal pinholes, minor corner creasing, and edge/handling wear. Overall, in Very Good condition.
