Description

Pogo: We Have Met the Enemy and He is Us Pig Villain Production Drawing (Walt Kelly, 1969). A rare story illustration believed to be by Walt Kelly (1913 - 1973) from the unfinished animated special Pogo: We Have Met the Enemy and He is Us. Kelly, creator of the Pogo comic strip, was reportedly unhappy with the TV special made of the strip, The Pogo Special Birthday Special. Following that, Kelly and his wife Selby decided to make an animated film on their own. Both of them had worked at Disney on the pre-war features and Selby had continued to work in animation after Walt left it to work in comic books and strips. This is the "pig villain" from that special. The film was to be a half hour, but it ended up being only 15 minutes or so. Parts of the unfinished film are available for online viewing. The drawing was cut from the film as indicated in the bottom right corner. Rendered in graphite on 12 field size animation paper. The drawing exhibits edge wear, smudging and a water stain in the center/far right area near the margin. Overall condition is Good.
