Description
Mildred Wetmore Tap-a-Tune Music Box Toy Cover Painting Original Art (Emenee Toys, c. 1940s-50s). Her big-eyed kid-stuff illustrations for Whitman Books' 1941 edition of Little Red Riding Hood affirmed Wetmore as a formidable talent in the literature of the nursery. More than a decade before the emergence of Margaret Keane as the preeminent big-eye portraitist, Wetmore had perfected that attention-grabbing style of exaggerated cuteness. Wetmore branched out into toy-box art with this delightful painting for a mass-marketed item called Tap-a-Tune, which consisted of an eight-key xylophone and a booklet of melodies, designed to teach music-reading skills while indulging the thrill of making noise. The Tap-a-Tune trademark was later adapted by Walt Disney Productions for a Mickey Mouse musical gizmo, but the present selection is an original-formula delight. Wetmore's stylized signature appears at lower left, and her studio address appears in handwriting on the reverse. Opaque watercolors on age-toned illustration board, with an image area of 14.25" square. There is some paint deterioration (most noticeably at the box-spine areas), but the main image is intact.
