Description

Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp Popeye Production Cel (Fleischer Studios, 1939). Popeye engages in a swashbuckling sword fight (improvising with a table leg) with the evil vizier at the end of the two-reel animated short subject film Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp. Directed by Dave Fleischer, this 1939 classic was the last of the three Popeye Color Specials, and it tells the story of Olive Oyl as she writes a screenplay for the fantastical tale of Aladdin (with Popeye and Olive Oyl starring in the romantic leading roles, naturally). Hilariously, the short ends when Olive Oyl receives a note from the front office reading "your story of Aladdin is being thrown out... and so are you!" Seen at the 19:40 mark of the film, this is an astonishingly rare hand-inked and hand-painted nitrate cel. The piece is framed under glass with a mat window size of 7" x 8" and an overall frame size of 13.75" x 14.75". Frame is sold as-is. Original nitrate production cels from the beloved 1939 short are remarkably hard to find, and they are considered treasured artifacts among Popeye collectors. This cel shows handling, wrinkling, and paint cracking, and it is in need of professional restoration. Poor condition.
