Description
"Oh Dear" Baby Portrait Illustration by Helen Schad Original Art (Samuel Lowe, c. 1940s-50s). The Samuel Lowe archives held a treasure trove of original children's book artwork, but also a surprising collection of baby portraits by midcentury artist Helen Schad. Throughout the 1950s Schad illustrated multiple young children's books, however she is better known for her pastel portraits of infants which were often used in calendars. Signed by Schad in the lower right, the bright-eyed tyke titled "Oh Dear!" is presented in her traditional style. Rendered in her usual pastel on vellum paper, this precious illustration is matted to 12" x 17" under protective acetate with an overall mat size of 20" x 25.5". The pastel has transferred slightly to the facing side of the acetate and the outer edges of the mat show signs of smoke shadows from an old warehouse fire, however the artwork remains unaffected. With typical handling and edge wear the artwork is in Very Good condition. From the Samuel Lowe Company Archives.Auction Info
