Description

V. T. Hamlin and Dave Graue Alley Oop Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-18-72 (NEA, Inc., 1972). Hamlin had introduced a time-traveling angle in Alley Oop in 1939, opening up the length and breadth of history and prehistory as a vast arena for his signature character, caveman Oop. The present selection has a Middle Ages feudal setting, with the weird additional touch of a humanoid robot. Though gradually moving into retirement during the earlier 1970s, Hamlin remained involved. He had found his vision failing and thus entrusted much of the artwork to longtime assistant Graue. Conventional wisdom holds that Graue had handled the daily Oop solo since 1966, but here Hamlin's seemingly three-dimensional layout style (Panel 1) is obvious beneath Graue's brush-inking. Graue had rebelled against his status as an employee of Hamlin (not of the syndicate, which employed Hamlin); by the time of this episode, the artists had ceased sharing a studio, communicating only in writing. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area of 20" x 6". Excellent condition.
