Description

Fred Moore "Fred Falls Off the Fire Escape" Gag Drawing by Jack Kinney (Walt Disney, 1938). Disney Legend Fred Moore (1911 - 1952) takes a tumble off the fire escape in this hilarious 12 field 3-peghole gag drawing by Disney renowned animator and director Jack Kinney (1909 - 1992)! Kinney and Moore worked on several films and shorts together in their time at the studio, including "All the Cats Join In". The two were friends and Kinney was reportedly one of the last people to see Moore alive before his untimely car accident. The gag drawing includes typed notes on the back describing Moore's fall at the "Narconian Club", aka the Narconian Resort where the studio held the Snow White wrap party in 1938. The party was held on June 4th to celebrate the unprecedented success of the studio's first animated feature film and though the festivities began normally enough the party later devolved into a night of drinking and dancing that led to more than a few wild stories. This included a horse in the hotel lobby and a prank on Walt where a hired policeman was brought in to tell the crew to quiet down. The gag drawing in this lot captures Fred Moore's drunken fall from the fire escape (or balcony) to the ground below. As mentioned in an interview with Bill Justice in the third volume of Walt's People, "Freddie Moore walked off one of the upper floor balconies thinking he was on the ground floor and ended up in a tree fortunately." The ink gag plays up how unharmed he was with Fred raising his drink and answering that he "didn't spill a drop". This gag is an incredible, comical piece of Disney history with a great story behind it. It even includes a hand-written note and rough sketch of the gag on the back in addition to the typed notes. Taking up nearly the entire page at about 10.5'' x 8.25'', the lot is in Very Good condition with light edge and handling wear and faint paint debris/corrections.
