Description

Saludos Amigos José Carioca Production Cel Courvoisier Setup (Walt Disney, 1940s/1943). "What's samba?" "Ah, the samba!" Saludos Amigos was the beginning of a lifelong friendship between Donald Duck and José Carioca, and this lot features a beautiful hand-painted and hand-inked production cel from the bird's debut accompanied by a custom Courvoisier background. The film was created after the Good Neighbor Policy was enacted and Disney was made an ambassador to improve relations between the US and Central and South America. A hand-selected group of Disney artists traveled throughout South America in a goodwill tour to prepare, and the fruits of their effort would eventually premiere on 2/19/1943 in the US. José helped to introduce Donald to South American culture, particularly in Brazil, and is full figure at about 3.75'' x 5.75''. He appears at roughly 39:13 when he uses Donald's hat as an accordion and makes a little music for his samba lesson. To make things even better, the cel is displayed on a coveted 8'' x 6.5'' Courvoisier custom background rendered in gouache on board with a WDP stamp in the lower right. These were created from 1938 to 1946 to accompany original Disney cels. An adjusted Courvoisier COA is displayed on the reverse and the lot is presented in a 15'' x 13.5'' mat. This lot may make you want to give the samba a try yourself and is a true piece of Disney history whether you are looking for new Courvoisier background or want more of José's adventurous spirit in your collection. The cel is trimmed. Good condition with light handling and edge wear, some rippling to the cel, and areas of paint separation.
