Description
Middle Sepik River Hand-Carved Wood Ancestral Masks Group of 4 (c. 1970s). Disney Legend and one of Walt's Nine Old Men, Marc Davis (1913 - 2000) was well known for his personal collection of art and artifacts from the indigenous tribes of Papua New Guinea; from that collection comes this group of 4 hand-carved ancestral masks from the Middle Sepik River region. Davis held the peoples of the Oceania region in high regard, particularly those Papua New Guinea, as did his equally acclaimed wife Disney Legend Alice Estes Davis; the couple would travel to Papua New Guinea in 1975 and again in 1978, exponentially growing their collection with each visit. Purchased during their trips, these intricately carved masks were crafted from singular pieces of wood with three of them featuring still-vibrant hand-painting and shell inlay as well as boar tusk and natural fibers, each created for sale by tribal artisans. The masks measure 15" x 7" (small), 27" x 12" (green paint), 32" x 5" (narrow, side eyes), and 32.5" x 6" (narrow front eyes) with an average depth of 5" across the group. The smallest mask bears a partially-remaining original label from Davis that indicates it comes from the Kandingai Village, and is noted as a Wagen mask; the term Wagen is used to describe ancestors or spirits who are viewed as more powerful and threatening than others. These detailed pieces were displayed in the Davis home from the time of its / their acquisition until Alice's passing in 2022; some of them can be found in images seen on the D23 website from both the 2017 Marc Davis in His Own Words panel slideshow and an exclusive interview with Alice Davis (prints included for reference). With expected handling and wear including age-related oxidation of the wood, natural imperfections, surface debris/wear from display, cracks, and some scratches/chipping, overall this group of ancestor masks is in Fair condition. From Disney Legend Inductees - The Marc and Alice Davis Archive.
