Description
Sepik River Hand-Carved Wood Ancestral Masks Group of 3 (c. 1970s). Disney Legend and one of Walt's Nine Old Men, Marc Davis (1913 - 2000) was well known for his personal collection of art and artifacts from the indigenous tribes of Papua New Guinea; from that collection comes this trio of ancestral masks from throughout the Sepik River region. Davis held the peoples of the Oceania region in high regard for their artwork, as did his equally acclaimed wife Disney Legend Alice Estes Davis; the couple vastly expanded their personal collection during their trips to Papua New Guinea in 1975 and again in 1978. Purchased during those trips, this trio of hand-carved masks have each been crafted for sale from solid wood exhibiting fantastic detail with the large free-standing and painted mask featuring protruding eyes measuring 29.5" tall with a base diameter of 10.5" while the hanging masks measure 25.5" and 26" tall with respective widths and depths of 9" x 8.5" and 6" x 5". According to Davis's original still and partially-remaining label found on their back sides, these pieces were created by tribal artisans in the Torricelli Mountains region of the Upper Sepik River and the Murik Lakes region of the Lower Sepik River while the partial label likely indicates a village in the Middle Sepik River region. Ancestral masks were traditionally created for use in dance ceremonies to represent ancestral figures, typically ornately carved and decorated. These pieces were displayed in the Davis home from the time of their acquisition until Alice's passing in 2022; two of them along with similar items can be found in images seen on the D23 website from both the 2017 Marc Davis in His Own Words panel slideshow and an exclusive interview with Alice Davis (prints included for reference). With expected handling and wear including age-related oxidation of the wood, natural imperfections, surface debris/wear from display, cracks, and some scratches/chipping, overall this remarkable group is in Fair condition. From Disney Legend Inductees - The Marc and Alice Davis Archive.
