Description
Aesop's Fables Paul Terry Concept Sketches plus Oil Can Harry and Pearl Pureheart Animation Drawings Group of 5 (Fable Studios/Terrytoons, c. 1922/1947). Paul Terry's first major successes in the animation business were with his Aesop's Fables shorts, which he produced from 1921 to 1929. It was the Aesop series that inspired Walt Disney to form his first animation studio, in Kansas City. Many of these silent shorts were based on old fables, like The Lion and the Mouse (1922). This very rare group of early sketches from the hand of Paul Terry (1887 - 1971) includes two sketch pages done for The Lion and the Mouse, with handwritten noted along with four images on one, and six images on the second; all are rendered in graphite on a sketchpad page measuring approximately 14" x 10". An additional drawing of the Lion and Mouse is included on 12 field animation paper. One more sketchpad page is included, with a graphite image of Aesop's Fables star Farmer Al Falfa as he paints a portrait of "Bumpy" the donkey while other farmyard animals gather around to watch. Added to these early pieces are two 12 field animation drawings from the 1947 Mighty Mouse short A Fight to the Finish, with two images of Oil Can Harry and Pearl Pureheart; these images can be found in the film at the 2:30 and 2:40 marks. Art is in graphite with red and blue pencil highlights; combined images sizes are each about 6" x 5.5". Drawings are marked 99 and 169.
