Description

The Wayward Canary Concept Sketch Page by Fred Moore (Walt Disney, 1932). Here's a real piece of animation history from one of the most important artists to ever work at the Disney Studios. Fred Moore (1911 - 1952), a natural draftsman with little formal education, was hired by Disney in 1930 while still nineteen. Here's the earliest page of Disney art from Freddy we've seen to date: a page detailing a gag for the 1932 Mickey Mouse short The Wayward Canary. In the gag, we see Mickey and Minnie with the canary Mickey has just given her, and is whistling along with the bird; Pluto hears the whistle, and thinks Mickey is calling him! The gag wasn't used, but that's a moot point here, as the artwork proves how talented the young Freddy was. Observe the image of Mickey being pounced on by Pluto, a great bit of action drawing, or the final image of Mickey getting his face licked by his loving pooch! Lovely stuff that looks like an effortless exercise for Mr. Moore. The art is in graphite on a sheet of 12 field 2-peghole animation paper; the notes in red are in Moore's hand, as is the "Fred" signature in graphite, in the lower right corner. Amazing! The art is in Good condition with handling and edge wear, and some paper toning.
